Our story

The story behind the shelves

We started small in 2005, tucked into a downtown Los Angeles loft, when founder Josh Spencer turned his full attention to what he loved most: books and records. Today the flagship store fills more than 22,000 square feet of the historic Spring Arts Tower — over 500,000 books and records, collectibles, and a maze of art galleries, hidden spaces and curiosities. The name was meant to be a little ironic, but every year it feels a little more true. Despite pandemics, strikes, fires and everything else, we've survived, thrived, and opened three more stores. We still buy, sell and trade books and records every day.

Why get lost here

It's a destination

California's largest book & record store

New, used and rare — one of the largest independent bookstores left anywhere.

The Rare Book Annex

A privately gated room of first editions, signed books, art, design, photography and architecture.

The Labyrinth upstairs

Hidden rooms, installations and the book tunnel everyone photographs.

Vinyl, bought and sold daily

LPs, 45s, 12-inches and 78s from the 1950s to now — rock, soul, jazz, punk, hip hop and more.

Four locations, each unique

Downtown LA, Studio City, Lost Books in Montrose, and Skull-Face Books & Vinyl in Honolulu.

Need a venue? Take ours.

Launch your book, shoot your film, book your band, throw a party among the stacks.
