Bespoke suits tailored to absolute fit precision

Alan David commissions true bespoke garments, built on the expertise of skilled custom tailors and master craftsmen. Your measurements are taken by master tailors and pattern cutters, never by sales staff. An expert patternmaker interprets your dimensions, and a sample garment is created to confirm the fit. Once approved, the final garment is cut to the precise adjustments made during your fitting.

What sets the house apart

Four answers the shop gives to the same question

Made in the USA, 100% hand-sewn

The Oxxford collection — a bench-made, entirely hand-sewn collection at the very top of the tailoring world, exclusive to Alan David in Manhattan.

Five generations, 100+ years

The longest-running tailoring operation in the United States. The average tailor at Alan David has over 25 years of experience.

Measured by a tailor, never a salesperson

Other stores rely on salespeople. Here a master tailor or fitter takes your measurements, and interprets them into your own paper pattern.

Never missed a deadline

Not during COVID, not after 9/11, not ever — including every wedding and time-sensitive delivery.

The bespoke process

Five stages, roughly four to five weeks

  1. Consultation · 30–60 minutes

A tailored discussion about your vision, lifestyle and requirements, then a curated selection of luxury fabrics from Italy and England.

  2. Measurements · 1–2 weeks later

Over 30 precise measurements capture your posture, shoulder slope and natural stance, so the pattern reflects your movement and balance.

  3. Basted fitting · 1–2 weeks

The suit is hand-assembled with loose white basting stitches so drape, shape and comfort can be perfected before any permanent stitching.

  4. Construct · 2–3 weeks

Full bespoke construction: full canvas chest pieces, hand-stitching and pick-stitched details.

  5. Fitting & delivery · 4–5 weeks from stage one

Final adjustments are minimal and finished on-site, your pattern is saved for future orders, and free lifetime alterations come with the garment.

Questions, answered

What is the turnaround time?

The standard turnaround for garments is four to five weeks. Alan David also offers a 2-week turnaround for clothing and a 1-week turnaround for shirts.

How many fittings will I need?

Typically two fittings are required to ensure the perfect fit, although occasionally a third may be necessary. Clients meet the master tailors during those fittings.

What if I gain or lose weight?

Alterations are free for the life of the garment. Alan David does not recut a garment for larger sizing alterations, but the tailors handle weight fluctuations at no additional charge.

What if I am not happy with the fit?

Alan David offers a 100% refund to any client not fully satisfied. Any garment that does not fit correctly after two fittings automatically gets recut.

Can you make a suit from fabric I supply?

Yes. The process is the same as the standard offering, with one additional week for delivery — the fabric must be sponged and cleaned before it is cut.

Do working buttonholes or pick stitching cost extra?

No. Pick stitching, hand-worked buttonholes and lapel buttonholes are all included in the package.
