31 beers on tap, craft cocktails, wine and spirits — New American eats made 100% from scratch.
895 Villa Street · Downtown Mountain View
The beer garden of Downtown Mountain View. The idea was conceived by founder Ted Kim in early 2006, who fell for the biergartens of Germany — drinking under massive chestnut trees at communal tables with complete strangers — and brought that spirit home. Steins opened on Villa Street in March 2013 and, until 2025, also hosted the official Mountain View Oktoberfest. 31 beers on tap, craft cocktails, wine and spirits, and a New American menu made 100% from scratch.

Our story
Born under the chestnut trees
The idea for Steins was first conceived by founder Ted Kim in early 2006. A Bay Area native, Ted simply wanted a new place to go that served delicious made-from-scratch cuisine and a robust selection of great craft beer. Without any prior restaurant or bar experience, he took off to Europe and became enamored with the biergartens of Germany — drinking underneath massive chestnut trees and trading World Cup banter with complete strangers at the same communal table.
That spark became Steins. The beer garden opened its doors in Downtown Mountain View in March 2013 to long-anticipated fanfare, and until 2025 it also carried the mantle of hosting the official Mountain View Oktoberfest. See you at the beer garden!
